The Humminbird 859ci HD comes in as a strong offering from the brand. It comes equipped with a large screen, GPS functions, and strong finding capabilities right out of the box. This innovative unit forgoes some of Humminbird’s more advanced sonar finding capabilities to offer you a strong unit at a lower price point than you’d expect.

Display

The display for this unit is a hefty 7” with a resolution of 800×480. Once you add in the LED backlighting and the full-color capabilities you have an easily readable, large screen which is still small enough to fit the vast majority of boats without cutting too much into your space.

Finder System

The 859ci HD isn’t the most advanced finder that Humminbird offers, but it still performs solidly within its own parameters. Forgoing Side Imaging here, what you’ll find is a 500W unit that features dual-frequencies at 83/200 kHz and is good for down to 1500 feet. With the addition of the deep-sea transducer, you’ll be able to read down to an absolutely astonishing 3000’.

The finder will bring things into razor sharp focus for you when paired with the screen. It does, however, lack the Side Image and Down Image features which are frequently found on Humminbird’s higher end options.

If the user doesn’t require the additional options, they’ll be able to save some money and find themselves with a powerful and easy to read finder however, making for a great fishing experience.

Additional Functions

The 859ci HD comes equipped with a GPS as soon as you purchase it. This particular model runs Humminbird’s proprietary Contour XD Maps right out of the box but you can change to any compatible mapping software your choice may dictate.

It also has the ability to store waypoints, making finding and marking the best spots you can find something that happens with amazing ease. Since it can be hooked into an Ethernet connection, changing the software and storing your data will come easily, and you’ll be able to switch things around as you see fit.

It also comes with the standard features like alarms, temperature, and speed gauges, making for a great overall experience for the user.

Ease of Use

This unit is remarkably easy to use, the menu system is quick and intuitive to learn and the buttons fit your fingers easily. The user will quickly be able to get a grasp on the menus and be able to use this device like a pro. The lack of additional sonar options will make things even easier on the novice, generating a truly user-friendly experience.

Overall Rating

If you’re looking for something cheaper than the high-end offerings but with the same basic utility to add to your fishing experience, there’s a strong argument to be made for the Hummingbird 859ci HD. It may lack the more specialized sonar features, but it’s still the sort of thing which can make for an impressive boost in your ability to bring in the big ones and keep track of where you want to land your lines. It comes highly recommended for the marine fisherman on a budget in particular.
